WeWriWa's launch contest!

Would you like to win a PDF of of The Emotion Thesaurus??

On February 3rd, over at Weekend Writing Warriors, one lucky participant from our linky list will win that very prize, very generously donated by the fabulous ladies at The Bookshelf Muse!

WeWriWa is a brand new Sunday blog hop. You sign up on the linky list, post no more than 8 sentences from one of your works, and visit other participants on the list. There's no end to the fun when a bunch of writers get together to share short excerpts from their writing. Romance is a popular genre here but believe me, even those snippets are not all traditional :D

We've already got 30+ peeps signed up at the site -- are you next?

What I love about something like this is how it forces me to be concise. It's why you hear advice to study playwriting or movie writing: when you're backed into a corner, so to speak, you find out what's really necessary to say.

I wrapped up the scene I was using for Six Sentence Sunday when that marvelous blog hop came to an end, so now I'll be pulling excerpts from the novel itself. Who knows what cool things may emerge from this exercise!

Really hope you'll come by the WeWriWa site and visit us all. We love company :)

Six Sentence Sunday #40 !!

The scene I’m using for SSS describes the wedding of Neal’s best friend, Sandy, to Sophie. The entire scene is in Neal’s POV.  During the ceremony Neal had some difficulty trying not to think about the one-night-stand he and Sophie shared. He had a harder time with memories of his first love, Laurie, who died before he said those three little words “I love you.”

April (and Sandy) grew up in Crescent City, Calif. An important bit of backstory is that although she now lives with Neal in Los Angeles, she still struggles with unrequited feelings for Sandy. For this scene, the ceremony took place on a beach; afterward, Neal and April go for a walk near the water. He’s told her if getting married means a lot to her, he’ll do it. She called that the most lopsided proposal ever, so he got down on one knee and asked if she would marry him. She pushed him over; something less than flattering slipped out of his mouth, as it sometimes does. April told him that even if he meant it as a serious proposal, neither of them is able to think clearly. I skipped the part where Neal asks if she believes that he loves her.

“I believe you, but love isn’t always enough,” she said softly, staring at her feet. “I’m just afraid. I didn’t get anywhere with Sandy, then I married another guy I thought was committed to me and that fell apart. I’ve seen women catch your eye and I’m afraid you’ll get bored with me someday.”

Out on the wide-open beach, in the bright beautiful sunshine, the best response to that was to hold her closer and whisper the truth into her ear. “That’s impossible babe, ’cause I’m crazy on you -- you light my fire -- you’re my soul and inspiration -- I love you, that’s all I know.”

After this bit are just a few more lines. Hope you've enjoyed getting to know these characters a bit.

So this is the last Six Sentence Sunday through the original SSS site. I’ll keep visiting the blogs I bookmarked, because those are some darn good writers and mighty nice people. Because the idea of posting snippets from your WIPs as part of a blog hop is such a great idea, I got together with two other writers to launch Weekend Writing Warriors (also known as WeWriWa). We're a bit different in that we're allowing excerpts of eight sentences.

We're also working out details for a launch contest, so keep your eyes on the WeWriWa site for that!

I hope I haven’t seen the last of you guys! I do appreciate every visit, whether or not you comment. Hugs to all my fellow writers, and to my readers :D :D

Introducing Weekend Writing Warriors!

I'm so excited! Teresa Cypher, Dana Renelt and myself are proud to announce our new site, Weekend Writing Warriors! The site will pick up where Six Sentence Sunday leaves off (its last day is January 27th), but with a twist -- we'll be allowing 8 sentences. Our linky list is already open though the list won't go live till February 3.

Teresa, Dana and I have met some truly wonderful people through SSS. We've read some moving, gripping, hilarious, and unique story snippets. I've found it very instructive to be restricted to a few sentences that still have to say something interesting. We want to be sure the circle continues.

We haven't finalized the details yet, but we're putting together a contest to help launch the site. At least one prize will be a PDF of The Emotion Thesaurus (very generously donated by The Bookshelf Muse, special thanks to Angela and Becca!). Soon as we have that all ready we'll let everybody know.

We're on Facebook too! Stop by and "like" us. :D You'll also find us tweeting under #8Sunday #wewriwa #Weekendwritingwarriors.

It's a similar setup to SSS -- sign up at the main site and post no more than eight sentences from an original work of yours by 9 am EST (U.S.) The admins will check the posts to be sure they conform. We feel eight sentences gives a bit better sense of the characters and the scenes.

At some point we'd also like to include links to published books by people who are participating in WeWriWa. We're still developing so keep your eyes on our site :D

Six Sentence Sunday #39

April’s a chef, hence the fillet reference.
“Ah, if you don’t believe me, go find some other sucker to string along.” He turned away then stopped. Of course he didn’t mean that. “Look, I know what I want, and it’s you.”

She looked less inclined to fillet him. “Maybe, but I’m not going to agree to anything today or in the near future because the sting of today is not going away for a while. Plus, I don’t want you to wake up some morning and realize you made a huge mistake.”
Half the fun of SSS is seeing comments on excerpts of your own work, but the other fun part is seeing the other snippets. There’s a fair amount of romance in the excerpts though several are not typical at all! There’s really something to please every reading taste.

The official Six Sentence Sunday is scheduled to end next week and I have one more excerpt. It's possible another version of SSS will be up in the near future also. I want to thank everybody who has come by my blog and read these excerpts, whether or not you commented. I enjoy visiting other SSSers a lot. Until next week, happy writing and reading J
