Six Sentence Sunday #40 !!

The scene I’m using for SSS describes the wedding of Neal’s best friend, Sandy, to Sophie. The entire scene is in Neal’s POV.  During the ceremony Neal had some difficulty trying not to think about the one-night-stand he and Sophie shared. He had a harder time with memories of his first love, Laurie, who died before he said those three little words “I love you.”

April (and Sandy) grew up in Crescent City, Calif. An important bit of backstory is that although she now lives with Neal in Los Angeles, she still struggles with unrequited feelings for Sandy. For this scene, the ceremony took place on a beach; afterward, Neal and April go for a walk near the water. He’s told her if getting married means a lot to her, he’ll do it. She called that the most lopsided proposal ever, so he got down on one knee and asked if she would marry him. She pushed him over; something less than flattering slipped out of his mouth, as it sometimes does. April told him that even if he meant it as a serious proposal, neither of them is able to think clearly. I skipped the part where Neal asks if she believes that he loves her.

“I believe you, but love isn’t always enough,” she said softly, staring at her feet. “I’m just afraid. I didn’t get anywhere with Sandy, then I married another guy I thought was committed to me and that fell apart. I’ve seen women catch your eye and I’m afraid you’ll get bored with me someday.”

Out on the wide-open beach, in the bright beautiful sunshine, the best response to that was to hold her closer and whisper the truth into her ear. “That’s impossible babe, ’cause I’m crazy on you -- you light my fire -- you’re my soul and inspiration -- I love you, that’s all I know.”

After this bit are just a few more lines. Hope you've enjoyed getting to know these characters a bit.

So this is the last Six Sentence Sunday through the original SSS site. I’ll keep visiting the blogs I bookmarked, because those are some darn good writers and mighty nice people. Because the idea of posting snippets from your WIPs as part of a blog hop is such a great idea, I got together with two other writers to launch Weekend Writing Warriors (also known as WeWriWa). We're a bit different in that we're allowing excerpts of eight sentences.

We're also working out details for a launch contest, so keep your eyes on the WeWriWa site for that!

I hope I haven’t seen the last of you guys! I do appreciate every visit, whether or not you comment. Hugs to all my fellow writers, and to my readers :D :D

She pushed him over; something less than flattering slipped out of his mouth, as it sometimes does. April’s a chef, hence the fillet reference.
“Ah, if you don’t believe me, go find some other sucker to string along.” He turned away then stopped. Of course he didn’t mean that. “Look, I know what I want, and it’s you.”

She looked less inclined to fillet him. “Maybe, but I’m not going to agree to anything today or in the near future because the sting of today is not going away for a while. Plus, I don’t want you to wake up some morning and realize you made a huge mistake.”
Half the fun of SSS is seeing comments on excerpts of your own work, but the other fun part is seeing the other snippets. There’s a fair amount of romance in the excerpts though several are not typical at all! There’s really something to please every reading taste.

The official Six Sentence Sunday is scheduled to end next week and I have one more excerpt. It's possible another version of SSS will be up in the near future also. I want to thank everybody who has come by my blog and read these excerpts, whether or not you commented. I enjoy visiting other SSSers a lot. Until next week, happy writing and reading J

He hadn’t meant to say that out loud. He snapped his head up. Oh shit, damn good thing she couldn’t grab any of her chef’s knives. He threw his arms open wide. “Well, what do you expect? I ask you to marry me and you push me into the sand.”

She called that the most lopsided proposal ever, so he got down on one knee and asked if she would marry him. She pushed him over. I’m skipping over his indignant exclamation; he asks why she did that and this is her answer. He’s stood up by this time.
“You are not asking me that today because you want a wife. We’re both too emotional for a serious discussion. We need to lighten up.”

Neal kept brushing his clothes off. Just because some ass divorced her years ago, now she wanted to push somebody around when they were at their most vulnerable. “Women . . . son of a bitch.”

He had a harder time with memories of his first love, Laurie, who died before he said those three little words “I love you.”

April (and Sandy) grew up in Crescent City. She now lives with Neal in Los Angeles but still struggles with unrequited feelings for Sandy. The ceremony is over and Neal suggested to April that they go for a walk along the beach. Neal thinks about how content he is with his relationship with April; they live together but have never discussed marriage.

I'm skipping over Neal thinking about how empty he felt after Laurie died, and picking up with him addressing April. He’s just told her if getting married means a lot to her, he’ll do it. She called that the most lopsided proposal ever.
Neal rubbed the back of his neck and frowned at his feet. She was forcing him to be obvious. Well, all right, if she really wanted the old-fashioned stuff, that’s what he’d have to do.

He took a deep breath, got down on one knee in the soft sand, held both of her hands, and gazed up at her with all the sincerity he could dig up.

“April, I don’t have a ring, but will you marry me, because I really love you?”

With an indulgent smile, she pulled one hand free then gave him a sideways shove.

Thank you for stopping by my blog today. Comments are gratefully accepted. There’s gingerbread men, eggnog, and old-fashioned filled candies for guests J Hey, they’re cyber treats and fat free!

EDIT: I've just found out Skye Warren is looking to gauge interest in continuing Six Sentence Sunday, which is scheduled to end as January closes. If you're a writer with any interest in seeing this project continue, go sign up!
