Weekend Writing Warriors 1/19/14

Heya. Would you guys make sure you answer WeWriWa's poll? As we're coming up on our first anniversary, we want to see what our participants feel about our blog hop. If we can make it better, we want to do that but we need some idea of what participants want.

WeWriWa programming note: Since we'll be having a little maintenance work done on www.wewriwa.com, there is a possibility that at some point tomorrow Jan. 19th, the page may go offline. Don't despair, for the time being we've set up a mirror page on www.wewriwa.blogspot.com just in case.

Last time, Kazimir showed up at Devorah’s house, apologizing for having attacked her rabbi friend. She’s furious with him. He offers her a gun and tells her to even things up. As she hesitates, he morphs his appearance: his head becomes skeletal with a large brow ridge, his fingers become elongated and bony,  greenish-yellow scales appear on his arms and neck, and his eyes become completely black —yikes!

Devorah grabs the gun, swallows her revulsion and crouches next to him. They exchange a few comments; she says she’s wondered what it’s like to smell somebody’s fear.

“Fear makes demons strong,” Kazimir said, “and hate makes us stronger still. All the hatred you’re aiming at me fills me like a long, slow orgasm.”  He grinned, showing long yellow teeth in a gargoyle face.

My stomach threatened to heave. I squeezed the trigger; the shot seemed hideously loud. He fell sideways, away from me, his own face crunched up in pain.

I dropped the gun and scrambled to my feet. Dear God, I’d just shot somebody!

Be sure to visit the Weekend Writing Warriors homepage for links to snippets from some pretty cool writers. I'm pretty picky about what I read and I've found several stories I can't wait to see more of every week. We range from lighthearted and romantic to sci fi, and historical. It's like being in a library, only better, 'cause you get to interact with the authors!

  1. Tense and exciting snippet, I don't think too many people would blame her!

  2. Why do I have a feeling the shot might not affect him the way she expects? A very dramatic excerpt, can't wait for more!

    1. *laff* Well, it does, yet it doesn't. The question is, why he goad her into shooting him? ;-)

  3. Whoa, that first paragraph is intense, both emotionally and descriptively. Great job Marcia

    1. Hey Jess :-) Thanks so much. I had fun with this scene, despite or because of the shooting!

  4. Technically she shot someTHING. lol. still, great job...intense emotions and the shock of pulling the gun is for the reader as well as her.

    1. In fact, the question of what or who she shot is something she asks herself in the full scene. It's easy to miss in this excerpt, but Kaz returns to his normal appearance after he's shot so that muddies the issue for Devorah. Thanks for coming by, Sarah!

  5. Whoaa this is so dark and unexpected! I agree with Veronica, there might be something...up! And I very much enjoyed the sensory information you give about the shot being loud. I'm guessing that's exactly what would seem incredibly strange and out of place in a situation like this. Great snippet!

  8. Can you kill a demon by shooting him?

    1. Hi Sue Ann. Depends on the demon, I suppose. In my story, some of the characters (like Kaz) are not "full" demons because they also work on behalf of the Light. They are part human. So these people can in fact be killed.

  9. Not entirely sure I'd feel bad about shooting a demon. Then again, even if she hit him in the right place, can a demon be killed by a standard non-immortal/non-supernatural weapon? Either way, after that I'd be keeping holy water on hand, just in case.

    1. It's a valid question. In the story itself, I do explain that some characters are part human and able to be killed. Full demons, however, cannot be killed; at least not this way.

      Nice to see you, Kate!

  10. Shocking - somehow I think she finally "sees" him for what she feels about him after attacking the Rabbi.

  11. Fantastic story, Marcia--like nothing I've ever read (which is great!) Now the questions start. SHe didn't kill him, so what were his intentions hen he told her to even it up. Was he mocking her affection for the Rabbi? Or did he feel true remorse for what he'd done? Hmmm... thoughts to ponder...

    Good 8! :-)
