Six Sentence Sunday #36

The scene I’m using for SSS describes the wedding of Neal’s best friend, Sandy, to Sophie. The entire scene is in Neal’s POV.  During the ceremony Neal had some difficulty trying not to think about the one-night-stand he and Sophie shared. He had a harder time with memories of his first love, Laurie, who died before he said those three little words “I love you.”

April (and Sandy) grew up in Crescent City. She now lives with Neal in Los Angeles but still struggles with unrequited feelings for Sandy. The ceremony is over and Neal suggested to April that they go for a walk along the beach. Neal thinks about how content he is with his relationship with April; they live together but have never discussed marriage.

I'm skipping over Neal thinking about how empty he felt after Laurie died, and picking up with him addressing April. He’s just told her if getting married means a lot to her, he’ll do it. She called that the most lopsided proposal ever.
Neal rubbed the back of his neck and frowned at his feet. She was forcing him to be obvious. Well, all right, if she really wanted the old-fashioned stuff, that’s what he’d have to do.

He took a deep breath, got down on one knee in the soft sand, held both of her hands, and gazed up at her with all the sincerity he could dig up.

“April, I don’t have a ring, but will you marry me, because I really love you?”

With an indulgent smile, she pulled one hand free then gave him a sideways shove.
Half the fun of SSS is seeing comments on excerpts of your own work, but the other fun part is seeing the other snippets. There’s a fair amount of romance in the excerpts though several are not typical at all! There’s really something to please every reading taste.

Thank you for stopping by my blog today. Comments are gratefully accepted. There’s gingerbread men, eggnog, and old-fashioned filled candies for guests J Hey, they’re cyber treats and fat free!

EDIT: I've just found out Skye Warren is looking to gauge interest in continuing Six Sentence Sunday, which is scheduled to end as January closes. If you're a writer with any interest in seeing this project continue, go sign up!

“Damn it, I’m not good at stuff like this. I know you miss going to church more often, and you miss your family, and you miss having a more settled life. I thought maybe being married would help with some of that.”

She pushed away and set her hands on her hips. “If you don’t honestly want to spend the rest of your life with me, quit talking about marriage. I’m not interested in a guy who doesn’t know what he wants.”

HELP THE ELF: I Found Santa’s Missing Nice List!

Hi everyone! As you may remember, a few weeks ago PETE the Elf had a touch too much Eggnog at the Holiday Christmas Party and as he stumbled home, he lost Santa's NICE LIST.

The North Wind scattered the papers to all four corners of the world, and The Bookshelf Muse put out a call to help find them in order to SAVE CHRISTMAS.

Ever since I read about it, I've been on the lookout. And then today, EUREKA!

Yes that's right...I found part of Santa's missing NICE LIST. There it was, fluttering in the wind, half caught under the corner of my welcome mat. And shock of all shocks, I recognized the name, and you might too.

Here it is below:

ImageChef.com

NAME: Teresa Cypher

LOCATION: western Pennsylvania

NICE LEVEL: 93%

NAUGHTY LEVEL: 7%

OBSERVATIONS: Teresa offers honest opinions as a critiquer and she's never mean about it. She's a writer with a gift for evocative phrases. She lets friends know she appreciates them, she has a sparkly outlook on life, and I'm convinced it's no accident that we became friends.

She bakes and donates gingerbread houses to her local hospice and to kids at local victims' shelters--I kind of think that wipes out that 7% Naughty, Santa.

She helped pull me out of a dark place and helped give me back my confidence as a writer.

Teresa, there's no way to properly thank you for that priceless gift, but I hope you enjoy the token I sent to your inbox.

RECOMMENDATION:     a) Coal                   b) Gift

Because poor Pete is dashing all over the place trying to hunt down the rest of Santa's missing Nice List, I decided to take care of this one myself. Teresa, I feel so blessed to know you! I hope you have a wonderful Christmas.

“Are you happy just living with me, or are you pissed that I haven’t asked you to marry me?”
He felt her stiffen in his arms. “You’re not thinking of making a pity proposal, are you?”
“Pity doesn’t have anything to do with it. If getting married means a lot to you, I’ll do it. I don’t want to lose you.”
She laughed then said, “That’s the most lopsided proposal ever!”

Neal thinks about how content he is with his relationship with April; they live together but have never discussed marriage. He also thinks about the enemies he makes by working with a non-profit foundation, going into neighborhoods with active street gangs and trying to convince kids to turn away from gangs. He’s just told April that he doesn’t want to leave her alone if anything happens to him. She asked why so many men think the world revolves around them and he protested that he didn't mean it that way.
“Well it sure sounded that way.” She crossed her arms then swiped her hands across both eyes. “Sorry, I’m just . . . more torn up than I thought I’d be.”
He opened his arms and gestured toward her. Yeah babe, that makes two of us, and that means we're not alone.
Her eyes shifted up and down the empty beach, like she was thinking about taking off, but then she leaned heavily against him.
